Before we settle into cooler nights and holiday prep mode, this article will walk Rio Grande Valley homeowners through five simple things to clean or inspect that can help keep your home in shape, without replacing a thing.

1. Clean Your Window Tracks

We get a lot of dust, debris, and yes — bugs — in the Valley. Over time, window tracks can collect grime that keeps them from closing properly. This can lead to air leaks, drafts, and even damage to the window itself.

Quick Tip:
Use a vacuum attachment or small brush to clear out dust, then wipe down the tracks with warm soapy water. For tight corners, a toothbrush works wonders.

 2. Check Door Thresholds and Weatherstripping

Even if your door looks fine, it could be letting in hot air in or building moisture around the edges due to poor installation. Fall storms and sudden humidity shifts can make this worse if your door or window weatherstripping is worn out or loose.

What to look for in damaged weatherstripping:

• Gaps at the bottom of the door or window
• Light peeking through edges of the door
